Serenity – managing anxiety

Serenity is from the Latin word ‘serenus’, meaning calm or peaceful. It is the a state of being where anxiety, worry, stress and all matters of difficulty disappear, if only for a short while and are replaced with tranquility, quietness, calm and peacefulness.

Finding Serenity is sometimes linked to remembering a time you were in nature, at the spa, or on vacation. Times where worry and stress melted away and were replaced by the present moment nurturing mind, body and soul.

This week at Veracis Classes for Mindful Living we explore ways to create more Serenity in our lives. I’ve heard people say the goal of meditating is to enter a state of serenity or calm. I personally prefer not to use the word ‘goal’ in meditation because it creates an attachment or expectation to an outcome.

Who doesn’t want the guarantee that meditating will bring us a sense of well-being, peace, calm or serenity. Fortunately, most people do notice a difference in their inner climate having learned to breathe and respond from the heart, rather than from strong emotions or over active thinking. Time seems to slow down.

Does the concept of having a goal in mind make it easier or harder to meditate? I think you know the answer. If we focus on the outcome then we cannot fully experience serenity. We are experiencing a form of anxiety that keeps us on a path of trying to get somewhere, wondering if we will ever arrive. Our active mind takes us out of the present moment either into the past or into the future, and an emotion follows. This pattern of reliving or over thinking causes anxiety that is felt in the physical body and energy centres, especially the heart chakra.

Entering the silence of meditation gives us the ‘time and space’ we need to refocus our intention of living a serene life. Let us support you in managing anxiety and stress by creating serenity from the inside.  Join us for a guided meditation and or yoga class this week to feel the group energy.
