A Gentle Reminder of What Matters

“Tis only when faced with our own mortality that we truly realize what it means to be alive,” Timothy Strot

Awakening

There are moments when life quietly, or loudly, reminds us that nothing is guaranteed. Not time, not certainty, not even tomorrow as we imagine it. These reminders don’t arrive to frighten us, but to awaken us.

When we remember that our time is finite, something within us is awakened. A softness and knowing is born. Priorities become clearer. Small moments feel richer. We may find ourselves less willing to postpone joy, truth, or rest.

Mortality, when approached gently, has a way of bringing us back to the present moment.  Not with urgency, but with respect.

I came face to face with my physical mortality in 2025.  Even with my deep spiritual connection to life, I was awakened to impermanence in a new way. My wish for you is to discover what truly matters to you.

This month, as we begin a new year, I invite you to reflect on how awareness of impermanence might support you in living more fully rather than more carefully.

A Moment to Pause

You might explore one of these reflections in quiet stillness or journaling:

  • If I truly honoured the preciousness of today, what would I give more attention to?
  • What feels worthy of my energy right now, and what no longer does?
  • Is there a conversation, expression, or release that wants my care?

There’s no need to resolve these questions. Simply noticing what arises is enough. If you journal, then this would be a lovely way to start writing.

Living Awake

Often, we think of mindfulness as something we do in meditation. But it’s just as alive in how we speak to one another, ourselves, how we care for our bodies, and how we allow ourselves to rest.

Remembering that life is temporary doesn’t mean living in fear. It means living with intention. It invites us to be honest, kind, and present with what is already here.

A Gentle Invitation

As we move through the coming weeks, consider this: What would it look like to live just a little more awake to the gift of being alive, without needing to rush, fix, or perfect anything?

May this new year month bring you moments of clarity, tenderness, and connection.
