Insights: Entering the Silence

Silent Meditations

Silence can be calming or agitating.  In daily life, everyday sounds contribute to ‘background noises’ that become a filter heard through. When the background noise, the filter, is removed thoughts seem louder. But they aren’t louder. They are now revealed. Becoming aware of excess thoughts makes it hard to sit still in a silent meditation.

Fortunately, with practice, direction and discipline the brain can be retrained. A sense of peace and calm take over. The busy thoughts fade in to the distance.  Soon the sound of bird chirping, leaves rustling, waves lapping up on a shore become crystal clear.  Breathing becomes easier and stress melts away.

Growing quiet comes through practice and patience.

Growing quiet is like music for the soul. The silence creates space to hear your inner voice of wisdom.  It is a journey that can be mastered with repeated practice.  Sitting in silence every day for at least 5 minutes builds a foundation for a disciplined meditation. It also reduces stress!

5 common reasons it’s hard to be in silence

  1. overactive thoughts
  2. physical discomfort
  3. heavy emotions
  4. loud external noises
  5. not believing anything is changing
