How to Create your Sanctuary
Having a place that is safe and sacred is important for spiritual well-being. A sanctuary is a place where you can rest, relax and feel safe. You can meditate, pray or use the space for creativity. It is sacred and respected.
- Dedicate a space.
It will only be used for meditation, prayer, or creativity. Have some guidelines for yourself such as no drugs in your sanctuary as you respect your space. Make sure others living with you understand the importance of respecting your space as well. Be clear and kind. - Use a comfy chair, mat or pillows, and keep a cozy blanket handy.
- Create an ‘altar’.
This can be a shelf or table with candles, self-care cards, smudging supplies, a mala, rosary, aromatherapy or anything that connects you with the sacredness of your sanctuary. - Unplug
If you need to have your phone, laptop, or notepad with you, set it to ‘do not disturb’. At least you won’t be interrupted. Soft music you only ever play when inside your space is another lovely addition. You’d be surprised how your body and mind respond!
Respect Your Inner Sanctuary
Now that you’ve created a physical space that makes you feel good, you can connect with your inner sanctuary. Your inner space is sacred. Respect yourself and respect comes to you from others.
Respect is how you treat or think of yourself and others. It is more than being polite or kind. It is the sacred relationship you have with yourself. Respect incudes self-discipline, self-love and self-encouragement. Respecting yourself allows you to make choices to reach your personal goals. You respect others, but not at the expense of your own well-being. Having a sacred sanctuary supports respect.
Reconnect with your inner sanctuary of self-respect at Loving Kindness Meditation. Live class is at 11 am. If you can’t make this time, the recording will be available for a week.
