Sounds of Holiday Spirit

woman-drinking-green-tea-christmasWhen was the last time you stopped and listened to the sounds of the holidays?
People laughing and talking, Christmas music, cars, horns, phones, children,  the charity bells, computers, the kettle boiling, ‘next please’ cashier.

When was the last time you stopped and listened to what wasn’t being said?

What did you hear?

What did you see when you looked into their eyes?

For as long as I can remember, I have seen and shared joy, happiness and enthusiasm during the holidays.  I have also heard and seen the sadness behind the smile, the masked loneliness, the anger,  the desire to be acknowledged, to belong and to matter.   These are  often shamefully hidden as people do their best to be joyful alongside everyone else.  It’s not easy being unhappy when everyone else is happy.

How can you develop compassion?

  • This holiday season slow down and genuinely listen and look at each other.
  • Find the kindness and compassion to connect with each other at your soul level.
  • Listen to what each is really saying.
  • Notice how your actions or inaction’s are affecting the other.
If you have said or done something where the other is hurt or upset, kindly acknowledge their pain.  It doesn’t matter whether you did something ‘wrong’ or not.  It matters more what you do with the situation.  Stop defending yourself and start interacting with kindness.  What matters is someone is hurting and wouldn’t it be simpler to acknowledge them than to challenge?

What every human being wants and needs is to be heard and loved.  Give this and it will be returned to you tenfold.
We must bring our authentic, loving self to every conversation and situation.  We must try to see ourselves in the others shoes.  This is how we cultivate compassion.
Listen and love with the heart, not the mind.

Happy Holidays,  with Light, Laughter and Love, Regina
