Why Revisit the Past?
This is a great question asked by one of the students in our Eliminating Diet Challenge Meditation Series.
Revisiting and reliving the past are not the same.
You cannot relive the past. You can create experiences that bring up similar feelings and thoughts. This is because healing continues well beyond a single moment, thought or desire. Everyone, at their core, seeks freedom from pain and suffering. And some of those memories go a little deeper.
Revisiting the past is not reliving the past. The past is the past. But there can be painful memories that have not been fully expressed and are felt just as much today. These emotions and thoughts, are experienced in the present moment, not the past. They are linked to the past affecting you today.
Unexpressed emotions become ‘held’ energies. This is like an infection that is trying to heal. It’s also why we have emotional responses to events in our lives that don’t always match the event. An example would be going to the hospital for a small procedure but having more anxiety than is considered normal. A past trauma in or near a hospital is likely surfacing to heal. This is extreme. Most of us have smaller moments where we are emotional or act a certain way, and don’t really understand why. This is where revisiting your past, your personal life, can bring light to your underlying desire to heal.
Your past has made you who you are today.
The universe brings you many opportunities to transform and heal, always in a way that is in your highest integrity. The easiest doesn’t feel easy when you are in it. This is why we draw similar people or circumstances into our lives. We are highlighting something that supports our spiritual evolution.
Heal the Past Today for a Different Future
You can heal the past in the present moment, and create a different future. Every time you have emotions or memories that trigger discomfort you have created an opportunity to transform that energy.
Everything is Energy
When you are lost in the past and your story, it keeps you stuck. While everyone feels stuck now and again, the fact that they know they are stuck is already a huge step forward. It asks us to observe what we feel today and process those emotions with love and compassion.
But When Can the Past be Done?
Once something has healed it no longer triggers anxiety, fear, or difficult emotions. You are neutral when the topic comes up and are able to talk about it with comfort and calm. It is different for everyone. You cannot force or rush the healing process. But every time you peel away a layer, you reveal an opportunity to grow. The more you heal in the present moment the easier it gets.
