The Art of Giving and Receiving

Do you find it easier to give than to receive?

Most people find it easier to give than to receive. And that is beautiful in its own way. So, what makes it harder to receive than to give?

One thing that stands out is having learned “it is better to give than to receive”. You will also have witnessed how happy someone is when you gave them a gift. You were the giver and they were the receiver, and everyone felt good. They gave you the gift of giving by receiving from you. You have done the same.

Giving and receiving work together in harmony and balance.

Giving and receiving include verbal compliments, notes of appreciation, as well as physical items.

  • Is it easy for you to offer the gift of acknowledgment or appreciation?
  • How do you respond when someone gives you the gift of acknowledgment or appreciation?
  • Do you feel obligated to give a gift to someone because they gave you one?
  • When you’ve had friends over for dinner, do you quietly expect an invitation in return?

What makes it harder to Receive than to Give?

One reason it is harder to receive than to give is because of that same belief mentioned earlier “it is better to give than to receive”. Somewhere within the soul a belief is planted that it is not okay to receive because it goes against “it is better to give than to receive”. This also makes it harder to ask for help! Just ask yourself how many times have you hesitated to ask someone for help because you didn’t want to bother them, or because you decided for them, they were too busy. Add to this a past experience of having asked for help and being rejected or let down and now you are hesitant to ask for fear of being hurt again! But this can be transformed.  Self-Love

Receiving gracefully is as much an art as giving gracefully.

Finding your way back to the art of giving and receiving requires awareness, allowing and action. Whenever there is a sense of obligation or guilt, it’s time to look within and clear out old beliefs. You have as much right to receive as you do to give. When you stop expecting so much of yourself or others you arrive into balanced harmony.
